Korea’s second largest mobile carrier, KT, was named as the world’s most sustainable telecomms company by the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJ-SWI). It is the third consecutive year that KT has won the award, and demonstrates a concerted drive by Korean tech conglomerates for supremacy in the global tech industry in more than just sales figures.
Selection is based on scores in three main categories: Economic, environmental and social. Factors that were considered included corporate transparency, customer privacy protection, eco-friendliness and contribution to society.
According to the results KT’s scores in environment and social areas were almost double the average of competitors’, particularly in green management strategies that battle climate change. The telecom also performed well in strengthening the nation’s telecommunications services environment and in expanding its communication technology to be available to a wider range of age and social groups.
“It is meaningful to see KT’s selection as No. 1 after competing against about 80 other companies,” said Kim Dong-su, director of the Sustainability Management Department at the Korea Productivity Center.
The sustainability index, started in 1999, rates corporate management sustainability and encourages companies worldwide to strive for a balance between financial success and social contributions.
